FAQs

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please take a look through our FAQs below before applying

If you do not see your question below, please contact adopt@ruraldogrescue.com

Q: How do I apply for a dog?

A: Submit an application above!

Q: Where are you and the dogs located? Can I come to your shelter?

A: We do not have a shelter, we are 100% foster based and you can meet our dogs at our events held in the Washington D.C. region. We adopt dogs out to DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Q: Where can I meet a dog or how do I meet a dog outside of adoption events?

A: You can always meet our dogs at our adoption events, which are under our adoption events tab on our website. To meet a dog outside of an event, please indicate your interest for a dog through an application. The applications are non-binding and allow us to respect our foster’s time. Once an application is submitted and approved, a private meet and greet can be arranged.

Q: How long does the process take?

A: We are all volunteers so the process can take as little as a few days or up to two weeks. You can always check on the status of your application by contacting the Adoption Team at adopt@ruraldogrescue.com.

Q: Can I apply for a specific dog?

A: Yes, please indicate on your application who you are applying for.

Q: What if I don’t know what dog I want, can I still apply?

A: Yes! You can be pre-approved! That means you go through the process as if you have applied for a dog, and then you wait for your best friend to arrive and your application will be ahead of the curve.

Q: Are dogs up-to-date on all their vaccinations?

A: Each dog adopted from Rural Dog Rescue is spayed or neutered, up-to-date on all core shots (including DHPP and rabies), microchipped, and is current on heartworm and flea & tick preventatives

Q: How do you make a decision on who gets what dog? Is it first come first serve?

A: It is not first come first serve. We try to find the best fit for the dog and the applicant.

Q: Can I trial the dog or foster first?

A: We are always looking for more fosters! We love getting our dogs into home environments. That said, not every dog is eligible for a trial period or in need of a foster. If you have a specific dog in mind, please fill out an adoption application and work with your coordinator.

Q: Is my dog house trained or crate trained or good with cats?

A: What we know about the dog depends on how long the dog was in foster. Our fosters work really hard to get the dog started off on the right foot, however, you can expect to do some house training. As for cats, we may not always know how a dog is with cats. We will try to get as many questions answered by the foster as an applicant moves through the process.

Q: Am I approved to adopt as a foster?

A: Yes! There are no additional forms to fill out. Please contact your foster coordinator to express your interest. Please note that since we often receive lots of applications for each dog, if you decide you want to adopt your foster dog, fosters will be considered alongside all other applications to determine the best fit.

Q: Do offer any adoption discount?

A: No, unfortunately we are unable to offer discounts on the adoption fee. We are all volunteer based and 100% of our adoption revenue goes towards the care of the dogs.

Q: What happens if I adopt a dog I can no longer keep it?

A: Our adoption contract states Rural Dog Rescue will always take a dog back into our care. We are to be notified if things are not working out but we assume adopters will try to work through issues with a trainer or seek other solutions before giving their dog up.

Q: What if I have other questions?

A: You can always email us! Email Adopt@RuralDogRescue.com to learn more.
